Women, Peace and Security: Global and Ukrainian Expertise and Experience

How does the implementation of the UN SC Resolution #1325 proceed in the other countries of the world? What lessons Ukraine can learn? What of this experience can be used in Ukraine and Georgia?

There were the issues that the #womenps-2018 participants and invited Ukrainian experts and activists discussed during the expert meeting “Women, Peace and Security: Global and Ukrainian Expertise and Experience“, that happen on October 11, 2018 at the Creative Women Space in Kyiv within the project “Women, Peace and Security: A Chance for Georgia’s and Ukraine’s Protracted Conflicts?

Benedikt Hielscher, Peacebuilding and Mediation Support Coordinator from the Department of Peace Operations (DPO) of PATRIR, presented the report on the challenges in ensuring participation of women in sub-national peace processes in MENA region.

What were the instruments of enhancing criminal investigation approach to sexual violence in the armed conflict in Colombia? Silvia Rojas-Castro, who worked as a researcher on gender issues, particularly in the improvement of the investigation and prosecution of sexual violence against women in the armed conflict in Colombia, shared this experience with the participants and guests.

Esmeralda Altmeyer, former gender assistant at the UNDP Arab States, dealt her vision on promotion of the gender-sensitive and responsive civic youth engagement to build long-term stable and peaceful societies in conflict (Yemen and Syria), post-conflict (Lebanon and Libya) and stable states (Jordan, Kuwait).

Miriam Müller, Project Assistant at UN Women National Committee of Germany in Bonn (Germany), told about the German’s experinece in the implementation of the UNSCR 1325 at the level of civil society (track 2 and 3).

Ukrainian experience was presented by Olena Suslova, gender expert and Head of Women’s Information Consultative Center, who shared her vision on challenges and opportunities of the NAP of Ukraine for implementation UNSCR 1325.

What does it mean to be a woman in the country which is currently in a state of war? Olga Ivanova, Operations Director of the Charitable organisation “Charity Fund “Stabilization Support Services”, proposed to feel it with the help of the playing tool “To be a Women”, aimed to transfer stereotypes about women living in Ukraine.

Ms. Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner for Gender Policy of Ukraine, sent her greeting remarks to the participants of the expert discussion “Women, Peace and Security: Global and Ukrainian Expertise and Experience”.
